Giselle was choreographed by Marius Petipa after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot whose original choreography was first performed by Carlotta Grisi (above) in 1841.

Giselle is a village girl who falls in love with a handsome stranger who is really Duke Albrecht disguised as a villager.  Hilarion, who is in love with Giselle and who has discovered Albrecht's hidden cape and sword, exposes Albrecht's true identity. Giselle becomes frantic (the famous mad scene) and dies of a broken heart.

In Act II, Giselle's spirit joins a group of others known as Wilis, who have also died before their wedding day. At night, as Albrecht is mourning the death of Giselle by her grave, her spirit goes to him and they dance their famous pas de deux in which there is a beautiful section of lifts where he appears to draw her down to him from flight. The Queen of the Wilis commands that Albrecht be killed, but Giselle's love saves him.  As day breaks, she disappears and he is left alone.

This summer's programme will work on excerpts from Giselle including the group Waltz from Act I.
